Coaching approaches
and methods

There are several approaches to coaching that can be effective depending on the individual's goals and needs. Here are some common approaches to coaching:

  • Solution-focused coaching: This approach focuses on helping the individual find solutions and work towards their desired outcomes. The coach helps the client set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals and supports them in identifying strategies and actions to reach those goals.

  • Cognitive-behavioral coaching: This approach focuses on identifying and changing unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors that may be hindering the individual's progress. The coach helps the client challenge their limiting beliefs, reframe their thinking, and develop new habits and behaviors.

​

  • Positive psychology coaching: This approach emphasizes the use of positive psychology principles to enhance the individual's well-being and success. The coach helps the client focus on their strengths, cultivate positive emotions, and develop a sense of purpose and meaning in their life.

​

  • Transformational coaching: This approach aims to bring about deep, lasting changes in the individual's beliefs, values, and self-perception. The coach helps the client uncover their underlying motivations, clarify their values, and align their actions with their true self.

  • Motivational interviewing: This approach focuses on helping the individual explore and resolve ambivalence towards making changes. The coach uses active listening, empathy, and open-ended questions to guide the client towards finding their own motivations and commitment to change.

It's important to note that these approaches are not mutually exclusive, and I may employ multiple approaches based on the specific needs of the client. Effective coaching relies on establishing a strong coaching relationship, active listening, asking powerful questions, and providing support and accountability to help the client achieve their goals.

Performance coaching takes many forms, I have specialised CPD and training in leadership, corporate & executive, Team and DISC.

There are some NLP techniques I teach all of my clients because of their transformational power, reframing our language eventually reframes our subconsciousness.

Coaching is beneficial to the whole family, through Thrive and Motivational Interviewing approaches we can build change through our conversations.

Person Centered

You are your best expert, by holding space for you, helping find clarity in your focus and strengths you will optimise your resources and capabilities to be as awesome as you wish to be.

Transformative

Something that produces a big change in or improvement to a situation. Transformational coaching is a way of working that moves beyond the surface of the presenting topic. It fundamentally impacts on all of 'who you are'.

Future Paced

We do not let your past define your future, we look at every experience as a lesson, an opportunity to understand what we have learned.  Every opportunity offers a chance to pause and reflect.

Qualifications & Training

Positive Psychology

Positive psychology aims to explore and identify the what, where, how, and why of positivity for individual success in order to flourish.

​

It doesn’t seek to remove negative experiences from life, but instead aims to bring balance in life and help individuals understand how negative experiences can serve a purpose in helping us to flourish.

​

Positive psychology is backed by a considerable body of professional research, and a coaching model based on positive psychology concepts can offer a structured and reliable approach to supporting individuals achieve their goals.

DISC Personality Profiling

DISC Personality Profiling is an excellent tool that can be employed for anyone in any situation: it’s effective, uncannily accurate, easy to understand and brings a depth of personal knowledge that changes how we perceive ourselves and others. Once understood, it changes everything!

As an accredited provider I use DISC for team, leadership and family coaching.  It is versatile and really brings a new level of clarity as to why we respond the way we do and to red others signs of strengths and communication preferences.

Motivational Interviewing

The main purpose of Motivational Interviewing is to resolve ambivalence, or “stuckness” in a client.

​

This is achieved through empathy, rapport-building, and freedom to explore change options—including not changing at all.

​

Motivational Interviewing isn't an actual interview - it's a conversation to truly and fully understand choices and behaviours, to try to ellicit potential new solutions to challenges for clients.  It is one of my absolute favourite approaches and is useful to everyone to understand. Instead of fixing, you use conversational questions to generate new ideas from the person who might be 'stuck'.

Neurolinguistic Programming (Master Practitioner)

NLP is particularly effective for coaching practice,  neuro-linguistic programming techniques are all about understanding the brain’s language. This is why, we are more likely to build success stories because we are using patterns involving language which create a shift at the subconscious (neurological) level.  

NLP helps us build rapport and relationship which is essential to create trust and enable me to hold space for you in our coaching relationship.

Masters in Education in Leadership

I am a graduate of University St Mark & St John with a distinction in my Masters, my focus was a research study of the behaviours and skills of senior managers & leaders overseeing health, education and social care services.    I completed my MEd in 2011 and developed a bespoke 360 tool which assessed leaders' transformational leadership styles and how these presented.  Whilst training I mentored other Post Grad students plus supervised new health visitors and social workers on their undergraduate programmes.

Post Graduate Certificate in Integrated Leadership

Integrated leadership focuses on models such as adaptive leadership, change management, partnership working, developing relationships and working practices with an ultimate goal of being beneficial to participants, service users, clients, customers.

I trained in many tools which are useful for coaching leadership including strategy, analysis, leadership and learning styles, personality preferences, change management and partnership maturities. 

​

Licensed THRIVE Practitioner (Childhood & Adolescence)

As a licensed THRIVE practitioner I work with children from early years to age 25.   Thrive is an approach which has an online assessment tool alongside activity and action planning with 1:1 coaching and development work.

​

Thrive is a dynamic, developmental, trauma sensitive approach to meeting the emotional and social developmental needs of all children and young people.   The tools equip us with the ability to support right time emotional development, as well as to provide reparative interventions for children with unmet needs from earlier in their development. 

Personal & Professional Diploma in Coaching

Accredited by European Mentoring & Coaching Council, I qualified in 2019 and since have undertaken significant CPD with The Coaching Academy including specialist diplomas in Executive Leadership, Education/Children & Young People and Small Business/Charity coaching.

These courses ensure my knowledge is up to date, books and further reading recommendations continue to develop thought leadership and enable me to network with other coaches from across the world.  This means I can signpost for further information or development with other coaches if you need them who may specialise in specific areas.
